Australia has almost 130 national sporting organizations and thousands locally, regionally and at state level. Almost 30 per cent of Australians, or six million people, are registered as sports participants.
The number-one team sport in Australia for men is football(soccer) and netball for women.
Australia’s unique football code, Australian Rules Football, is played by over 550,000 children and adults, and has the highest attendances of all sports in Australia with attendances at 2.5 million people per year.
In 2008-09 the government committed $220 million to the Australian Sports Commission to develop the national sports system and enhance the training of high-performance athletes.
Australia was in the top five medal count at the 2008 Beijing Olympics, winning a total of 46 medals, 14 of them gold. Australia was also in the top five for the Beijing Paralympics, winning a total of 79 medals of which 23 were gold.
